Autumn is here and now that the temperatures are finally dropping, it is time to put together your new wardrobe. Your comfort should obviously be your number one priority, but staying stylish is way easier than you’d expect. If you follow our simple rules about what you should and shouldn’t do in terms of fashion for the upcoming months, you are sure to succeed.
Do: Layer
If you took physics in high-school, you probably still remember that the key to stay warm in autumn and winter is not to grab the biggest coat that you can find, but actually to wear multiple layers that would help you insulate the temperature of your body. During colder days, layering is a must, so make sure that apart from the sweaters and cardigans you also have plenty of long sleeves and base layers, preferably the ones not made of cotton. Wear a t-shirt with a turtleneck and combine it with a cardigan or a sweater vest to ensure that you are going to stay warm and cozy all day long.
Don’t: Wear lightweight clothing
It is time to organize your wardrobe and to put away all your cotton shirts and linen jackets and give preference to clothes made of heavier fabrics like wool, tweed, corduroy, and denim. Truth be told, they might still come in handy during early September days, when the sun is still here, but after that, toss them away until next spring. Not only lightweight clothes don’t protect you from the natural elements of autumn, but an outfit made of a woolen overcoat paired with a chunky sweater and some linen chino pants simply doesn’t fit in a winter landscape.
Do: Go for the right clothes
Some people may find it difficult to express themselves through style during autumn, when their main priority is their comfort and not how stylish they might look to other people. However, if you choose the right clothes, you can easily achieve them both. These knitted woolen sweaters, for example, are perfect for autumn and if you choose one that has an intriguing pattern, like the cable knit sweaters that have been on every celebrity over the last couple years, you can look effortlessly stylish even when you wear it with basic trousers. Want to elevate your looks even more? My advice is to get a good, high-quality coat; you can throw it over any outfit and make yourself look 10 times more fashionable.
Don’t: Avoid patterns
During the next three months, patterns are your best friends. In fact, patterns and the fabric that your clothing is made of play the biggest role in creating trendy looks for this season. Summer traditionally ends on Labor Day, so now you can finally take your plain shirts and flannel jackets out of the closet and wear them with any monochrome outfits to create looks that scream autumn. However, if you want your attire to be really interesting and appropriate, don’t mix together too many patterns, as it will make your outfit look too confusing, and not in a good way.
Do: Get a good pair of boots
A really good pair of boots is a necessity for every man and if during summer we can buy in bulk basic t-shirts and not worry about wearing them for many seasons, during the colder season we need something more reliable and long-lasting. There’s nothing better than a good ol’ pair of black leather Chelsea or military boots, but if you’re looking for something more cruelty-free, there are plenty of alternatives on the market. Since they are so versatile and practical, these shoes will look good with any outfit you decide to wear, plus they will protect you during sudden weather changes and unexpected rains.
